This 'n That

THE BROKEN LO-FI HEARTS

“There is a new gang in town” The Broken Lo-Fi Hearts present their self-titled debut EP straight out of the depths of loud-guitarred horse-saddled heartbreak.

It’s sad, it’s fun, it’s therapeutic. It’s on bandcamp:

Sums it up nicely

I don't know much about Brian Eno, nor did he influence me in any way creatively (not that I know of). But I love this particular Briano Eno quote. Recently found it again to describe to a friend what I am looking for in sound mixing and arrangements:

“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”

A NEW MUSIC VIDEO

In a lucky coincidence, hanging in my mum's garden recently I have caught on camera what was perhaps the most exciting incident in the life of this peculiar creature. So I turned it into a music video. Zero budget, zero skills:

Fifty recommended albums

Nobody asked for it, yet here it is: a list of 50 albums that I would deem 'pretty close to perfect'. For utterly different reasons these 50 have outlasted many others in my ever shifting listening habits. In many cases, something deeply personal is attached to the sound - a memory, a well-known face, a chapter of adolescence. Sometimes the listed title is more of a pars-pro-toto trying to stand for an artist's entire awesome oeuvre. Sometimes two albums are needed to properly reflect the impact one particular band had on me. And finally, some bands will forever refuse to be defined by one single album and instead force me to list them just by name, in the 'appendix'. I love lots and lots and lots of music and it is impossible to convey all of the joy it brings to my existence. This is a little glimpse. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
